Welcome to Mrs. Barwick's second grade class! This page will hopefully answers all your questions about our classroom, including policies and procedures. Please e-mail me if you have any questions or concerns.

Home Folder:
Every day, your child will be bringing home a blue "Home Folder". Please make sure it comes back to school daily in their backpacks. This folder will contain a monthly calendar that will document daily behavior. Also, reminders, memos, and class work may be placed in the folder throughout the week. Please check this folder and initial the calendar box daily. If you have notes/papers to send to school, please place them in your child's home folder. Your child will be responsible for checking their folders in the morning and turning in notes/papers.

A "Homework Packet" will be sent home on Fridays and will be due the following Friday. Please work with your child to complete the assignments at a comfortable pace. Always check your child's work with them to insure correctness, completeness, and neatness. The assignments will connect to prior skills taught. Daily reading assignments will also be required. Spelling words (sight words) will also be included in the Packet to practice for the spelling test given each Friday. The homework coversheet is also our class newsletter and will be posted on the class website weekly.

Please make sure your child is on time to school every day. Campus doors open at 7:30am. Your child may eat a free breakfast in the cafeteria prior to coming to class. If your child arrives after 8:00, you will need to sign him/her in as tardy. Please make every effort to have your child in class well before 8:00am. When students arrive, they have "morning procedures" to complete prior to our day starting. When your child is late, they miss out or may be rushed; this may cause a rough start to their day. If your child will be absent, please contact the school's Attendance Line at 558-5422.

I will be teaming up with Ms. Messer (next door) for afternoon dismissal. Dismissal is at 2:15 p.m. If your child rides the bus, he/she will be escorted to the rear of the school to the buses. Please remind your child of proper bus manners. If your child is in daycare (on or off campus), they will be escorted to the person(s) in charge of their afternoon care. If your child is a car pick-up or walker, he/she will be escorted to the front of the school. Please pick your child up before 2:30p.m.; after this time, you will need to sign your child out. For car rider dismissal, parents are encouraged to stay in their cars and drive through to pick up their child. Afternoon dismissal can be hectic and I will not have time to talk about your child's progress at that time.
If your child will be going home a different way than normal (with a friend, a relative, car pick-up not bus, etc.), I MUST have the request in writing for your child's safety. If you need to sign your child out, please do so prior to 1:45pm as the front office (as well as our classroom and the parking lot) becomes very hectic during this time of day.

Your child was issued a Student Number when they enrolled in an SDHC school. This number is used for getting lunch (and checking out library books) and will need to be memorized. Your child's Student Number is on a memo in their Home Folder. Please make sure your child practices their number. A form for Free/Reduced Lunch has been provided in the school-wide First Day Packet.
Lunch With Your Child:
If you wish to eat lunch with your child, please wait for your child in the courtyard (picnic tables) or in the cafeteria just a few minutes prior to our lunch time. Your child may bring one friend to eat with him/her outside. Guidelines for eating in the courtyard are posted next to the sign-in computer in the office. Click here to view the PDF. Please inform me when you plan to have lunch with your child so I am aware of where my students are during lunch. Even just a quick 'hi' on our way into the cafeteria is sufficient. You are responsible for monitoring the students with you during lunch (no running around courtyard, cleaning up, etc.). Please refrain from bringing in special lunches for your child from restaurants. It is unfair to his/her classmates and may cause jealousy.

Water Bottles:
I recommend your child have a water bottle to use at recess and throughout the day. I allow students to keep a water bottle at their desk to drink from during the day and refill as needed. Please make sure only water is brought to school and the bottle has a tight fitting lid. By having water available to them, they are less dehydrated, more focused and alert, make less trips to the water fountain during lessons, and it's cool to have! Bottles will be encouraged to go home often to be washed. Our school recycles plastics if your child prefers to use disposable water bottles.

I will be conducting formal conferences with all parents at least twice during the year at required school-wide Conference Nights (October and March). I will also hold conferences as needed throughout the year. At these conferences, I will be discussing your child's reading progress, math progress, social skills, work habits, or other pertinent information regarding achieving benchmarks and report card grades. If you would like to schedule a conference with me, please let me know. I am available most mornings, afternoons, and early evenings. If you need to cancel a conference, please call the school or send me a note.

If you are interested in contributing some of your time in our classroom, please see the memo in this packet. I would love to have volunteers work one-on-one or in small groups with the students, chaperone field trips, read a story to the class, help out at special grade level events , help out at special class events, photocopy/laminate, donation of supplies, PTA liaison, luncheon dates with your child, and SO much more! Be on the look out for more information and opportunities to volunteer!

If you would like to celebrate your child's birthday at school, please let me know a few days in advance. It is appropriate to share cookies or cupcakes with the class during our lunch time. Mini cupcakes are the perfect size and kids love 'em! You may bring them in at lunch or drop them off in the morning and I will pass them out at lunch time. Our academic schedule does not accommodate celebrating at other times during the day. Please do not send balloons, flowers, or gifts to your child at school. Those special things should be shared with family. When sending in party invitations, please provide an invitation for ALL students. If it is not your desire to invite all the students, please see me for contacting parents and getting your invitations to students outside of the class/school. Thanks for your cooperation in advance.

School Uniforms and Class T-shirt:
Chiles Elementary has a mandatory uniform policy. Your child should wear the appropriate shirts and pants/shorts/skirt to school daily. When your child is out of uniform, a reminder note will be sent home.

All first grade classes will have a "Second Grade Friends" t-shirt. Our class shirt color has yet to be determined. All students will have a shirt to wear on Class T-shirt Day, to various school functions, and on field trips. Your child may wear their "Second Grade Friends" class t-shirt on Tuesdays. You will be informed when your child may need to wear their shirt on a different day due to a special event. Please see the order form in this packet.

Classroom Pets:
Currently, I do not have any pets in the classroom. However, I do have a small community of mealworms and darkling beetles.

Toys & Cell Phones:
Please do not allow your child to bring toys or cell phones to school. I do not want electronic toys (I-pods, Gamesboys, etc), other toys, or cell phones to become lost or broken at school. Please encourage your child to keep these items at home for safe keeping. SDHC has a new policy on cell phones - students are permitted to have them in their bags, however, they are not allowed to have them "on" during school hours. Please see me if your child carries a cell phone or electronic toy to school for special circumstances (such as daycare). Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.

If you or your child has a special talent or event to share with the class, please contact me to schedule a time. Unscheduled presentations might not be shared that day due to our busy schedule.
